Research Methods

A good seminar work implies the usage of the research methods. These methods will briefly be made available during the second seminar sessions and can be downloaded here Research Methods .

After the “Introductory Session” and subsequent topic choice, every student must prepare him or herself by reading the literature relevant to the selected problem, and prepare an approach and method for reaching his/her target. Please consult your supervisor for relevant literature and if you are moving in the right direction.

A good seminar work can be your first step in writing a sound master thesis (Diplomarbeit).

Notes on preparing seminar papers

Before submitting a final paper we strongly advise you to:

  • Finalize the plan (Gliederung) of the paper and preliminary contact your supervisor. In the previous years many papers received unsatisfactory grades because of the logical gaps in the line of thinking and absence of consistency in a paper. Make sure you avoid it. Everything you write into your paper should bring you closer to answering your main research question.
  • Not try answering too many questions in one paper. In general, an excellent literature review of the selected topic could be a better alternative than an ill-formulated survey conducted with 20 friends of yours. Please ask your supervisor whether your focus is precise enough.
  • Cite every sentence, which does not belong to you. Please make sure you really do it. Every omitted citation will considerably push your grade down. Consult “Formatting Instructions” on the right citation format.
  • Format the paper as described in “Formatting Instructions” . Please plan 2-3 days on just formatting your paper. You can always talk to your supervisor if you have any questions.

Non-compliance with the regulations will push your grade down considerably.
